ASSESSMENT TASK 2 – GROUP PROJECT/REPORT

The student MUST manage environmental and sustainability best practices in an automotive workplace for specific applications that safely follows workplace procedures to meet required outcomes.
This includes:
Develop, implement, and review an environmental action plan for one [1] automotive workplace. 
During the practical demonstration, you will ask the student observation questions that will address the skills and knowledge aspects of the unit of competency. The student will respond orally, and you will record the student’s response.
To achieve a satisfactory outcome, the student MUST manage environmental and sustainability best practices in an automotive workplace on one [1] different occasions in the automotive service and repair workplace before competency can be achieved for the practical component, and answer all questions presented by the Assessor.
The student MUST manage environmental and sustainability best practices in an automotive workplace for specific applications that safely follow workplace procedures to meet required outcomes.
Topics will include:

  • Plan compliance with environmental regulations and sustainability best practices.
  • Implement an environmental action plan.
  • Review the environmental action plan.

Assessment will take place in a simulated workshop environment relevant to the trade stream being studied.

Task: Develop a Basic Environmental Action Plan

Upon completion of this task, you should be able to demonstrate how to manage environmental and sustainability best
practice in an automotive workplace. The student MUST manage environmental and sustainability best practice in an
automotive workplace by developing, implementing and reviewing an environmental action plan for one automotive
workplace.

• Environmental regulations and standards relevant to automotive workplace, including commonwealth, state and
territory legislation and local government by-laws and regulations and penalties (Handout 1)
• Environmental Action Plan template (provided by Trainer) (Handout 2)

Procedure:

Your Environmental plan follows the same structure as the Checklist and will be discussed and completed as your group
compares the Checklist with the Environmental plan developed by your group as a class activity:
1. You must ensure your plan includes objectives, timelines, responsibilities and budgetary restraint.
2. The plan should include:
      a. Environmental law, regulations and standards and penalties
      b. Sustainability best practice
      c. Description and likelihood of hazards
      d. Pre-emptive actions to be taken
      e. Inventory of pollutants
       f. Safety equipment
       g. Contact details
       h. Communicating with neighbors and the local community (complaints handling procedure)
       i. Minimising harm to persons on the premises
       j. Maps
       k. Actions to be taken during or immediately after a pollution incident (major incident)
      l. Staff training
      m. Transporters of trackable waste
      n. Contact details
      o. Checklist
      p. SDS location

3. Your group will research the environmental legislation, regulations, and standards that relate to your Australian State of Operation, Council area and record the relevant legislation and regulations
4. Obtain or confirm the allocated budget to the Environmental Plan and the actions that may incur an expense. For example, regular disposal of contaminants, pump out of grease trap, disposal of tires, wages allocated to managing the Environmental initiatives, maintenance of equipment, etc.
5. Your group will obtain or create an Environmental Policy and Procedure as well as a Complaints handling procedure and major incident procedure
